Warning! Blogging Can be Bad For Your Health!

This morning I was woken up at 3.30am with a terrible cacophony of music going on in my head!

I couldn’t understand why this was at first. There was a Bon Jovi song mixed in with the duet from The Pearl Fishers; REM was definitely in there somewhere along with Tarja and several songs from Les Miserables and gradually it started to dawn on me…

A couple of days ago I signed up to take part in the Sad Songs Blogfest on the 30th March. I had been thinking about this before I went to sleep and the result was that at 3.30am every sad song I have ever heard had started playing in my head and the noise had become so loud it woke me up. It doesn’t end there though. Oh no!

When I realised that it wasn’t going away, although it did seem to quieten down once I was awake, I decided that the only way to get rid of it was to write the names of the songs down. So, I put the light on and dug out my notebook which lives beside my bed just in case I wake up in the middle of the night with a great idea for a blog post (I knew it would come in handy one day) and started writing. At this point my OH woke up and started complaining about lights etc. I explained what was going on to which he grunted something like “Ridiculous!” or words to that effect. He then rolled over and went back to sleep and I carried on writing but before I knew it I was also writing themes and ideas for the ‘April A-Z Blogging Challenge‘. When I next looked at the clock it read 5.15am and I thought I should really try to get some more sleep. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other ideas. She clearly has a strange sense of humour because at 5.23am a solitary blackbird starting to sing and by 5.30am every bird in Aberdeenshire had flocked to MY garden to join in. Whilst I love the dawn chorus it’s amazing how loud it can be when you’re trying to get to sleep and so at 7am I decided enough was enough and I got up. My intention was to have a lie in today after a very busy week. Oh well…there’s always tomorrow…

So, if anyone out there is thinking about starting a blog, please do so. It’s great fun, but be warned – it can be bad for your health!

  1. Denise, I just started blogging again this month as part of the March Madness challenge. And, like with you, it has taken up a lot of my time. But it is productive time. However, I realized I had stopped exercising in the mornings. So yesterday, instead of blog-hopping, I went walking in the park, making up my mind to incorporate exercise back into my daily routine. Thanks for the reminder to not allow blogging to interfere with my health.

  2. OMG I can relate, I’m up most days by 4 and if its 6 or after I get nothing done before my real job. But I was awaking earlier before I got into blogging and would watch TV so now I just work. But many a.m.’s I awake at 1 or 2 with an idea and try to stay in bed until 3. I finally made it a point to go to the gym today because that goes by the wayside too! You are so right in this post.

  3. Linda – it’s amazing how much time it does take up, even just thinking about it, but I absolutely love it and wouldn’t give it up for anything. However, you’re right that we should make sure we still maintain our ‘other’ life as well. I guess it’s all about balance.

    Lisa – I’m really glad it’s not just me! It’s incredible how blogging can take over your life if you let it. I have to say that I would never have thought that when I first started. Imagine what it must be like for full time bloggers.
    Good for you for going to the gym. I’m sure if we don’t manage to keep a bit of balance between blogging and the rest of our lives that we would go a bit mad!
    You clearly don’t need a lot of sleep though! I couldn’t cope with waking up at these times every morning.

  4. Thank you for mentioning the Sad Songs Blogfest. After watching everyone else host one, I thought it was high time I had one.

    I used to blog a lot more than I do now. (Coming up on seven years since I started my blog.) I finally found a routine where I could blog and still accomplish my long to-do list.

    I have my posts for the A to Z Challenge scheduled and ready. Think I’m good to go until May 2 for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group posting.

  5. Diane – 7 years is a long time to have a blog! I have dabbled with blogging a bit in the past but only really got into it properly a year ago. It does start to take over your life at times though and I need to find the balance that you obviously have.

    I’m so impressed that you have your A-Z posts ready! I only decided to do the challenge a week ago and I’m still not properly ready for it yet. I will get there though 🙂

    Re. your Sad Songs Blogfest, you’re very welcome! I’ve had a great time going through my cd and iTunes collections to find the perfect songs.

  6. I have just read your post, which made me smile.

    So many times I have awoken with voices in my head especially since I joined the A-Z Blog Challenge about four days ago.

    However this morning, I awoke not once but several times. Starting at 0215am, through to 0530am. First there was music, followed by a number being called and so on. I recall asking the universe to awaken me by 0530am this morning.

    Perhaps they don’t have clocks up there or they forgot to put them forward – “Bless them all!”

    I can’t see without my lenses so at that time of the morning writing is out of the question. However I do tend to have a good memory of dreams and I write them down once I wake up.

    It’s just crazy isn’t it? I never wake up in the middle of the night thinking about my ‘real’ job but blogging seems to get you like that.

    Maybe they did forget to put their clocks forward 😉
