So, you’ve decided what it is that you would like to achieve in life and you’ve set your goals.
You’ve written them down to give them importance and you’ve SMARTened them up. All you need to do now is to achieve them. It sounds simple enough but this is where the hard work starts.
You need to dedicate some time every day to working on your goals. I’m not talking about hours and hours but you need to refer to them every day to stay focused on them. Read over them, focusing particularly on anything that has to be done in the short term. Plan how you are going to achieve it and do whatever it is that needs to be done immediately. Don’t put it off or think that it’s ok to do it a bit later. You will most likely forget.
If one of your goals involves updating your CV, do it now. Don’t leave it for another day. Something might just come up out of the blue tomorrow requiring an updated CV and you want to be ready to grab that chance if it comes along. Perhaps one of your short term goals is to go out for dinner with friends next week. Make sure it’s in your diary. Book a taxi if you don’t want to drive. If you need someone to look after the kids, sort it now. Don’t leave it until the night before only to find that no-one is available.
When working towards achieving your goals you should ask yourself the following questions:
* Why do I want to do this?
* How am I going to do this?
* When do I want to achieve it by?
* What do I need to do in order to achieve it?
* Who can help me with this?
Write your answers down and again make them as detailed as possible.
Much of achieving goals is taking chances and grabbing opportunities whenever they present themselves. You’ve heard the saying being in the ‘right place at the right time’. To me that means being ready if an opportunity arises. If you are not prepared and something comes up you will most likely say ‘I’m not ready’ or ‘it’s not the right time’ or maybe even ‘it wasn’t meant to be’. If you are prepared it’s a different story. You go for it! You grab the opportunities that come along if they will help you on the road to achieving your goals.

When one of my friends was very young she saw a beautiful house in Edinburgh. It looked like a miniature castle and was absolutely stunning. It was also far removed from the type of house she had been brought up in but, she decided that day that she was going to live in that house no matter what. She started work at 16 and bought her first flat at 21. She sold her flat for a large profit a few years later and changed jobs to earn more money but she decided that she was never going to earn the amount she needed to buy this house as long as she was working for someone else and so she decided to look for some kind of self-employment where there was no limit on the amount she could earn. All the time she remained totally focused on buying this house. She found a network-marketing company with a product that really interested her and began to build her business. She was completely focused on earning enough money to buy this house and having the kind of lifestyle most of us only ever dream about. After several years she had worked her way up to becoming one of their top level managers. She was earning vast amounts of money and had monthly car allowances from the company which allowed her to buy virtually any car she wanted. Her children went to private schools and her clothes and accessories were the best that money could buy. Lo and behold, on her 35th birthday, the house she had coveted for almost 30 years went on the market. Because she had focused totally on this major goal she was able to view the house and make a good offer that same day. The house was hers within no time. If she hadn’t been focused and prepared she would have missed that opportunity and the house would probably never have been hers but because she had spent years planning and revising and tweaking her plans to keep her on track she was ready when the opportunity presented itself.
You need to do the same thing. Your goals may be smaller than this one, they may be much larger but the planning and preparation required are the same whatever the size.
So – get out there and start going for things you really want and deserve in life. Good luck and remember where you first read this when you become a multi-billionaire!
Until the next time,
